Sports coaching is one of the most exciting areas of coaching and mentoring to get involved with!

The increased stress of competitions can cause athletes to react both physically and mentally in a manner that can negatively affect their performance abilities.

They may become tense, their heart rates race, they break into a cold sweat, they worry about the outcome of the competition, they find it hard to concentrate on the task in hand.

This has led coaches & athletes to take an increasing interest in the field of sport psychology and in particular in the area of competitive anxiety. That interest has focused on techniques that athletes can use in the competitive situation to maintain control and optimise their performance.

So what are these sports coaching techniques?

It is commonly accepted that winning the mental side of sport is as essential as the physical side. These days, it's far more widely accepted, therefore many top athletes say this makes the difference between winning and losing.

For instance, in a research project, basketball teams (comparable skill sets) were given pre-match instructions to carry out. One set of teams was asked to physically practise 90% and visualise 10%. Another set of teams was asked to practise 50% and visualise 50%. The last team was asked to practise 25% and visualise 75%. Guess who were the winning set of teams? Yes you got it...the 75% pre-match visualising teams!

There's a clue here to the 'inner'game' of sports. Your whole system is magnetic, attracting and powerful. The power of this internal focused energy must not be underestimated. The England rugby team says that playing at Twickenham is worth about an extra 11 points! That's pure unadulterated energy coming from the crowd!

If you imagine this same energy internally for every player on the pitch, you start to see why some teams will win, even though on paper they shouldn't!
